Hey Hive! Can’t believe wedding day is only 20 days away! Trying to kick it into high gear with all the DIYing I want to get done. First up our favors. Now I knew for a while these are what I wanted to make and I had my eye out for a heart silicone mold. When I found one at Wal-Mart during Valentine’s Day I bought it immediately….not thinking to myself that I should buy more than one–mistake. I read many reviews about these favors having a tendency to get moldy so I knew I wanted to wait until last minute to make them to avoid the mold at all costs. Here is the website where I got the recipe http://bargainhoot.com/2010/04/20/diy-birdseed-ornament-recipe/ . Although I did have to tweak it slightly, using about 1 c. of birdseed per 1/4 c. water/gelatin mixture.
Here are some pictures of the process! It did take forever because I only had one mold and originally I didn’t think they’d have to set up in the freezer, but I did end up having to put them in the freezer for 10-12 minutes so they wouldn’t fall apart out of the mold.
Use unflavored gelatine,
and mix with bird seed.
Press into molds–I used the back of a spoon. Then make a hole using a round object.
Place in freezer to set.
Pop out and let dry completely! I let my first batch dry 16 hours before moving on to the next step. Every so often I would flip them over to ensure each side was drying.
After they are completely dry, string you twine through the hole and attach thank you tag.
Final product! Unfortunately we are only half way there….
