- Wedding: September 2012
As a means to cut costs for my wedding, I have decided I will be that crazy bride that does her own flowers. I see all over the internet and wedding blogs comments from people that think brides that choose to do this are out of their mind. Fair enough since there are more than enough things for us to worry about the week of the wedding, BUT I would also think I was out of my mind to pay $500+ on flowers that I could do myself.
So with that said, this past weekend I set out to do a trial run. I wanted to find out a couple things. 1. Confirm that I could do it 2. Figure out how long the roses would last. (This would help me in determining how far in advance I can put them together, the Wednesday or Thursday before my Saturday wedding) and 3. Find out how long it would take.
I bought the flowers on Saturday and let them sit out in water with the plant food in it. I put the bouquet together on Sunday, put water in the bottom of the vase and put it into the refrigerator.
I am happy to announce that it was a success!! Below is a picture of the finished product. Granted, this is about half the size I would like for my bouquet, but it would make a good size for either a bridesmaid or maid of honor.
- I purchased 2 dozen roses from Costco at $16 (actually ended up using only 21 due to 3 broken ones).
- green waxed floral tape and or electrical tape (it gets covered by the ribbon anyway)
- Stem cutter or very sharp knife
- Straight pins or pearl-tipped corsage pins
I YouTube’d a lot of videos on how to’s as well as followed the link below for printed instructions. http://www.bridesofaustralia.com/Diy_Bridal_Bouquet.html
In total, cleaning the stems, pulling bad petals, etc, I would estimate it took me about 30-45 minutes from start to finish to make the bouquet. Not to shabby!!
I think for the actual wedding flowers I will use:
- 3 dozen for my bouquet
- 2 dozen for the MOH bouquet
- 15-18 stems for the bridesmaids bouquets.
I still have yet to do a trial run of the boutonnieres, stay tuned!
Flowers Day 1 (Sunday)
Flowers Day 4 (Thursday) The petals on the outside flowers were a bit wilty and they were dropping a bit,b ut considering it was 4 days later, I think they look pretty good. Confident I can make these 2-3 days before the wedding.
