Here’s how I made my Red Sox garter in less than an hour (and for less than $10!)
I grabbed some ribbon and elastic (making sure that the width elastic I chose would be smaller than the smaller ribbon I chose, leaving enough room for seams, etc). The Sox charm I bought off eBay (as earrings, so I have extra!).
I attached red-white-and-blue fabric ribbon to some satin white ribbon (that was wired – turns out removing the wire is pretty easy). I’d played with the idea of making it centered but went with a little more frill at the bottom. To begin I sewed the below seam to hold in place (but later took it out in order to feed the elastic).
I sewed along both long edges, and then fed the elastic through with a safety pin. I had a slight mishap (due to fraying) where the whole elastic ended up in the middle of the garter and I had to make a hole to get it out. Don’t do that.
I made two ribbon bows and sewed them together. I attached the Sox charm to the garter first with a few hand stitches, then the double ribbon bow on top of that. WALA!
Maybe the week or so before the wedding I’ll close the back end of the garter for a comfortable fit (planning on losing weight – we’ll see how it goes!).
