I was lusting over a cardbox on Etsy but couldn’t bring myself to pay over $100 for something I could easily make. I scoured craigslist and ebay looking for a relatively inexpensive suitcase I could make over for our reception. I found the beauty below on Ebay for $20 (the lining was very badly stained and pea-green when I purchased it).
I purchased some navy blue Rit Dye and got to work sponging the inside fabric until it was a deep, saphire blue.
If you notice in the upper, left-hand corner there is a chip clip holiding the edge. The lining had shrunk from previous water damage and I was trying to stretch it back out. I used a gluegun and some elbow-grease to get the lining back in place. Once that was fixed I moved on to painting the eterior white with bronze hinges.
This is the finished product. My wedding colors are Tiffany blue, navy and light pink. I bought the penants from Hobby Lobby and stenciled the letters on; they’re being held by mini clothespins. I finished the exterior with a coat of Marth Stewart’s white glitter paint I found at Home Depot. I love how it turnd out, and the best part is the hinges and locks still work even with a few coats of paint!
