- Wedding: August 2011
I wanted a personalized cake topper that looked like me and my groom, but they were just so expensive on Etsy and other similar vendors. I found these wood figures on Amazon.com for $4 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004MRU6OC/ref=oh_o01_s00_i00_details).
First I sketched out in pencil the lines and details I wanted to match our wedding attire. I found a pearl finish acrylic paint to mimic my wedding dress and went over it with many thick strokes to make a sweeping texture.
For details, I put on Crystazzi crystals before the paint dried to attach to my one shoulder dress on the figure. I cut a small piece of tulle to make a birdcage veil. I also filed down a side of a small wooden ball (from Michaels craft store) to glue on as a low bun for the hair.
I finished it off by spraying the figures with a clear acrylic sealer, then glued it down onto a 5″ mirror.
Overall, costs were around $10-15 for wood figures, paint, detail attachments, and mirror. It took me about an hour or two for a few days, spanning about two weeks. Of course I had to hide the bride figure from my groom so the dress would stay a surprise!
