Hmm.  Maybe some kind of hook that you could mount on the wall, and then string lights to that?  Like command hooks?  Not sure they’d be strong enough.  Or something vertical that you could somehow attach the lights to… I’m sure it’s possible.  Hopefully someone will chime in who has done this!

hmm, this is just an idea… but gyms have volleyball court nets, right? maybe you can get them to instal the poles and then string xmas lights between the poles till you create a web of lights. You could then station the tables near the poles so people dont walk into them or decorate them with streamers, flowers, or balloons.

Unsure, if this would work but could you place rope or fishing line across the gym in the balcony area and then hang your lanterns and things from it in different locations?

I was also going to suggest fishing lines…. They are cheap and should work for you, the only problem with this project is it is going to be time consuming…

But I was thinking, maybe you can get something like fishing net, and run it or tie it somehow to the balcony to created the illusion of a fake roof without the fake roof… Then just use the fishing like to attach to the net…

Hope that helps….

I wish I only had to deal with a gym ceiling, I have a venue where the ceiling is double the height with a skylight and to string lights is almost impossible, I want the paper lanterns also but unsure of how to get them hung up, we can rent a maintenace man w a scissor lift to hang them but with a man who is not a decorator it will be a challenge haha let alone trying to figure out how to hang the lanterns, we have 18 rafters! I figure 81 lanterns min. we also are on a strict budget….when are you getting married? I have 3 mths to the date and have alot to do still

Have you seen this posting? I love how creative it is, plus you don’t need to hang or attach anything to the walls or celing.  Could this work?

Another idea is to string them from the balcony to pillars. A set of 2 pillars from Oriental Trading Co. is $34. You may need to anchor them, but a few bricks from Lowes, or free rocks on Craigslist will do the trick 🙂 I would string several from the top of a single pillar and evenly spread them out like a fan as they reach the balcony. This way you can purchase less pillars, but still have the coverage.

Or if you simply want to have the look of lights, but aren’t so set on lanterns, you could use a projector of some kind:

Good luck 😀

hello!!! i’m a diy bride on a budget also and i would buy the pllastic table cloth on a roll in whatever color u want and drape between the rafters. and i would use a floral wire on a spool to hang the lanterns so it will be stable and u could light them. and u could still add christmas lights!! just a thought.
