- Wedding: April 2018 - Country Club ceremony, ballroom reception
Remember the moss balls? After sitting on my hard drive (and floating through my dreams) for months, I decided I still loved them and had to have them at our reception. Since I’ve been crafting up a storm making so much other stuff for the wedding, I figured I’d try my hand at these bad boys. They are sooo simple!
We plan on hanging a variety of 7, 9, and 11 inch balls mixed in with the lanterns. You’ll need a Styrofoam ball in your preferred size (try to get a green one, I ended up with white ones since I was lazy and didn’t want to make multiple trips), some moss, spray glue, 12 inch pieces of floral wire, ribbon (if so desired), and monofilament. I would also recommend a VERY well ventilated workspace and a little mask if you don’t want to end up a bit queasy from the intense glue fumes.
First, take a piece of wire and shove it through the ball.
Form each end of the wire into a loop:
Next, get your moss ready. You can apply it as is, out of the bag, or you can do as I did and make more work for yourself. I decided the moss looked a bit weird and unnatural right out of the bag. So, I cut it up into little pieces first.
Now, bust out the spray glue (and preferably your mask) and spray a section of the ball. Roll the ball in the moss to coat.
Pat a bit to get the loose pieces to fall off and repeat a few times to cover the ball completely.
I let ours sit overnight to ensure everything bonded well. From here, all you need to do is decide whether you want a ribbon or monofiliment hanger. I’m still not sure, but I’m leaning towards the monofilament, as it’s virtually invisible:
