I went to the San Francisco Flower Market too! I went the day before my wedding, bought $200 worth of flowers and made my bouquet, the bridesmaid bouqets, about 5 boutonierres and 5 corsages, and 15 centerpieces.  It was so much fun to play with all the beautiful flowers! It did take the whole day to assemble everything, even though I had several friends and my sister helping. It also made much more a mess than I had anticipated.

The only mistake I made was that I didn’t cut the stems of my bouquet short enought, so the proportions look a little funny.  I didn’t even notice until I saw the pictures!  No big deal though, the satisfaction of making my own bouquet made up for any imperfections.

I used purple hydrangeas, light pink dahlias, deep burgandy dahlias, pink tuberose, rosemary sprigs, lisanthus, deep purple calla lilies and white calla lillies, citrus leaf greenery, some kind of deep purple tropical leaf, and purple artichokes (my favorite part!).

Hydrangeas worked well because they have so much flower mass for such a slender stem.

Here is a pic.

I agree.  Amazing.  DIY bouquets is one of the parts I’m looking forward to the most.
