It doesnt seem to flow right. You may lose some time, but if it were me i would forget the fabric, get some patterned paper (which i have multitudes of stocked all over the house) and apply paper letters to it. Its not really expensive to buy paper, just go to your local walmart and buy a pack of scrapbooking paper or textured cardstock in a pack of 50 for five dollars. you can use one type of paper for the letters and a different one for the background.

due to the way it is hanging on a simple string without any significant pressure, yes, i would say they are also paper. if they were made of wood, the paper pennants and string would most likely be showing signs of strain and it wouldnt hang right. You can also find these letters premade at any craft store. I believe Hobby Lobby has a large selection of them in all sizes.
