So being plus size I really couldnt find a garter that would fit in those cute garters. So I decided to make my own! I am super happy with it!
(please dont mind the jeans)
So this was actually really really simple to make- if you know basic sewing machine skills!
So I bought 2 yrd of black lace, one strip of taffida (6 inch tall by 34 inch wide), and 2 yrds of ( I think ) 3/8th of an inch elsatic in black!
So I measured the elastic around my leg….made sure it wasnt to tight…jus so it fit snug. I did it over my jeans that way it gave it just a slight loseness when placed on the bare leg!
Now depending on your stretch of your elastic you will want to stretch it around the leg really good. Some with little elastic needs to be pulled tighter….other like the woven elastic needs to be pulled slightly!
After measuring the elastic I then layed out my fabric. I did about 2 1/2 times the highth of the elastic. I then did twice the lenght of the elastic. So if you cut the elastic at 20 inches you double that for your fabric length!
I folded the fabric in half long ways (hot dog style) and pinned it with straight pins!
I then sewed the open edge together. Leave the two ends open so you can place the elastic through!
Once you have it sewed then turn it right side in! this will take a little bit because the opening is small. I used my pinky to pull it through!
Now time to add the lace. I stretch the lace out across the taffida. I positioned the lace so that just a little bit of the top part of the lace was hanging off the top edge! I pinned it with straight pins and proceeded to sew it down!
I sewed it 1/4th of an inch away from the edge…..stay as close to the edge as possible this will allow your elastic to go throw easier and lay flat!
After its all sewn you will runn the elastic throught it! ( be sure not to let the opisite end pull all the way through!)
Once you have the elastic in place….pull the ends so they will over lap. I did about an inch that I knew the elastic would hold up when pulled on!
You are going to sew this together. After you have it sewn tightly you are going to move the fabric around to cover the opening. I over lapped it a little bit so it wouldnt pull apart or seperate….then I sewed it down to the elastic. I did this about three times. One in the middle of the over lapped ends and then one on each side of the middle!
I turned it so right side in so you can see the fabric on the outside and the lace on the inside.
I then added a bow and a bottle cap of darth vader. I love it and I know the FI will be really suprised! Plus you can not tell they are really for a plus size woman!
Two of these cost me under $10 to make….
What do you all think?
